THE « PROCESS » PROJECT

Most of the photo files were built up from interviews with craftsmen, such as Fuad QUTURI (San’a, Yemen), ASHARI (Bandar Qeshm, Iran).  First interview with lutemaker Fuad QUTURI in 2004 was the turning point “Process Project”. The resulting paper “La souche et le luth” was co-written with Samir MOKRANI, namely the translator.

Samir was to become then the coordinator of the Oral Heritage Preservation program for UNESCO in San’a, and definitively a key-person of the heritage inventory for UNESCO between 2005 and 2012. Under his supervision,  “La souche et le luth” became then a whole chapter of the book: “Qanbus, Tarab, le luth monoxyle au Yemen” (Geuthner, 2013).

Unlike the “GAMBUS project”, every next coming studies enlarged the scope to persian lutes & zithers. Excepting the setar construction manual, every reports actually consist in mixing state-of-the-art docs & personal shots. The case of the qanbus / gabusi / gambus has been significantly studied, with a significant contribution by the indonesian makers in Borneo & Sumatra. From late 2016, deco patterns of the family have been extracted towards the “GAMBUS” project.
